FIV/FeLV Testing for Cats

At Action 4 Animals Hawaii, we follow current shelter medicine and veterinary recommendations for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) testing.
 

Why aren't all kittens tested?

Healthy kittens under 6 months of age are not routinely tested for FIV/FeLV.

Testing in young kittens can produce false-positive or inconclusive results because kittens may still carry antibodies they received from their mother. For this reason, veterinary professionals generally recommend a targeted testing approach, using these tests when they are medically indicated rather than as routine screening for every healthy kitten.
 

Young kittens may be tested if they:

• Have had symptoms or illness that could indicate FIV or FeLV.

• Have known exposure to an infected cat.

• Are recommended for testing by a veterinarian based on their medical history or condition.

• Originated at Hawaii County Animal Control & Protection.

• If we tested their mother the results of her test will be on their health card. Kittens born to negative mothers are at very low risk.
   

Cats 6 months of age and older are tested prior to adoption whenever possible.
 

Can I have my kitten tested before adoption?

Because of our distributed foster-based system and so many adoptions being done at the Petco Cubbies, it's reasonable for us to offer this service on-demand. If your kitten has not been tested but you would like them to be, we strongly encourage reaching out to a community resource such as Aloha Animal Alliance or discussing it with your vet at your initial wellness checkup. The test usually costs between $40-$50.
 

Please keep in mind that FIV results in kittens under 6 months of age may not be definitive, and your veterinarian may recommend repeat testing once your kitten is older.
 

Our Recommendation

We encourage all adopters to schedule a wellness visit with their veterinarian soon after adoption. Your veterinarian can discuss whether FIV/FeLV testing is appropriate for your individual cat or kitten based on their age, medical history, lifestyle, and the other pets in your household.
