Every day on Hawaiʻi Island, cats and dogs face abandonment, illness, injury, and overcrowded shelters. Action 4 Animals Hawaii was founded by a group of volunteers who refused to accept that reality.

Since 2022, we’ve helped nearly 2,000 animals find safety, medical care, foster homes, and loving families. From bottle-fed kittens to at-risk shelter dogs, we’re working every day to save lives and reduce pet overpopulation on the Big Island. No one can do it by themselves - It Takes An Island.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

Hawaiʻi faces a severe animal overpopulation crisis.

Each year there are thousands of animals abandoned, "unexpected litters", and life siutations which make keeping pets difficult. There is always more need than there are resources and space.

As a primarily foster-based rescue, Action 4 Animals Hawaii:
Supports and trains foster parents

Finds homes for adoptable pets

Supports TNRM for community cats

Transports adoptable dogs to mainland rescues where they have a higher chance at adoption

Please note that we are not a shelter, sanctuary, or Animal Control - we are a network of foster parents and volunteers. While we would love to help everyone, space and resources are limited.

If you need to surrender an animal, please contact County of Hawaii Animal Control & Protection at (808) 327-3558.

We pull animals from Animal Control as space allows.
